ARTIST Spotlight

Pier (Piergiorgio) Mazzi

LOCATION: Sydney, Australia

CURRENT PROJECT/WORK: Developing my first feature film, “They Did It for the Views”, and creator of TV show IP, which led me to start a social media challenge to pitch it to a major studio (possibly, or to anyone interested in producing it).

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND

I was born in Rome, Italy, where I grew up and lived for about 30 years.

I moved to Australia in 2013, and in 2017 I decided to go to film school after realizing I wanted to work in the film industry. I wasn’t that young compared to when most people start, but that didn’t stop me. Today, I still strongly believe in what I’m building and where I’m heading.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A FILMMAKER AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU?
Before filmmaking, I was a musician and played in a band for over 10 years. Creativity has always been part of my life, just expressed in different ways over time. Life took me in different directions for a while, and when I first arrived in Australia, I was working in an office job that didn’t feel like my path. It the same time, since I was a kid, I had always been passionate about films — watching them constantly, studying them without even realizing it. At a certain point, even if it felt a bit late, I understood that filmmaking was the direction I wanted to take. Movies like Fight Club and many others made me realize that storytelling can challenge people, not just entertain them — and that’s the kind of impact I want to create.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR LEECH?

LEECH was my third short film, and initially it came from a very practical place — I wanted to create a project that would push me further and strengthen my portfolio.

I was looking for something that could also have potential beyond just a short film, something expandable. The idea came to me while I was at the gym — one of those moments where something just clicks. From there, I started building it into a concept that could grow into something bigger.

HOW IS THE IG CAMPAIGN GOING? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ADD SO PEOPLE CAN CONNECT WITH YOU?

It’s a long game. Growth is slow, but the goal isn’t shortcuts — it’s building something real over time. I’m documenting this process of creating a TV show from scratch. No connections, no shortcuts, unfortunately. What I want is to connect with people for who I am and what I want to create. I want to build a real audience and a community around that. At the end of the day, I want to create something that people genuinely want to watch — and hopefully, connect with.

WHAT OTHER INTERESTS AND OR PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE?

I also work as a videographer and editor, and sometimes as a photographer. I still play music occasionally, but right now my main focus is moving forward as a film director — directing my first official feature film and pushing to get my TV series produced in the coming years.

YOUR SAGE ADVICE FOR NEWBIES IN THE INDUSTRY OR FOR OTHERS WHO ARE ON THE SAME JOURNEY?

If you love films, start as soon as possible. Don’t wait. Try to understand what your goal is and what role in the industry fits you best. Connect with people early — the right connections can grow with you over time. For example, Ryan Coogler met his composer Ludwig Göransson during college, and they built a long-term creative partnership.

Watch films, learn from them, and most importantly — do what you genuinely enjoy.

At the end of the day, that’s what keeps you going.

is and what role in the industry

fits you best."
